Ok doc you wanted to know when i began production on my HTPC for the family. Well I have officially begun ordering parts and putting things together. So here will be information on my trials.

Initial setup.

I spent a day setting up an old computer of mine just to test a few theories on my old TV. Once i was happy with the results of my experiments it was time to start purchasing the toys needed to create what I wanted.

Step1:
lubby needed a TV that would actually support all of this. Ok most of you in the world probably already have 2-5 HD ready TVs of various types and sizes, but lubby has never been a big TV enthusiest so he was still rocking an old standard definition TV from years ago. Hell I only owned 2 TVs and one of them was still the TV me and my wife was given when we got married.

So lubby got online and started doing his homework. I figured if i wanted to see this goal come to completion within a reasonable time frame I would have to be careful of the ammount of money I spent on a TV. So I measured my current entertainment center for size and found that the largest size I could fit into my current entertainment center, wich by the way looks amazing in my living room all wood and glass doors and things of that nature, and I did not want a simple black/glass stand cause they look too sterile IMO. Ultimately I decided that 42" was going to be my limit and that 40" would be acceptable if i had to suffer going down a bit for price. Being strapped for cash for this whole project I decided to start at the bottom of price and work my way up. I started my search as I always do on newegg.com and then compared to local stores in my area to find where I could get the best price for what I needed. Literally about 5 hours of reading reviews and comparing options I landed on what seemed too good to be true. I found a TV that was well cheaper then my expectations and had plenty of inputs for my project. For 500$ I found a 42" TV with excelent reviews everywhere I personally looked. Please do not go around trying to find bad reviews for this TV, and if you do don't tell me :)

So this is the TV I will be rocking. http://us.sanyo.com/LCD-Televisions/42-Diagonal-LCD-Full-HDTV-1080p-DP42841

Sanyo is not a brand that I have used in the past, typicaly I would have wanted to stick with Samsung, but again money was a huge factor in this move. The only thing it did not have was optical audio out, wich i hope does not cause me much trouble in the future. It did however have coax audio out, so 5.1 and all that jazz is not excluded from the deal by any means.

My first impressions of this TV once I got it home was complete amazement. It even prompted me to choke up the extra cash every month for HD subscription from my TV provider. The viewing angle is amazing, I can literally not find an angle other then behind the unit wich causes more then a very minor and almost impercievable difference in picture quality. I also read many reviews about TVs of this size and price range stating the speakers would be totally unacceptable. This TV however is perfectly acceptable with just its built in speakers. Granted thier is no heart stopping bass, it does not sound any worse then a factory installed car stereo. The reviews i read stated as much, and again was a major reason for choosing this particular TV, as I will not soon be ready to invest in a 5.1 stereo system for use with this TV.

I also purchased 2yr extended warranty so that basically anything goes wrong within 3yr total time im covered for a max of like 70$ repair. Some of the reviews I read of this product had it going splat between 1 and 2 years, so I figured I should cover myself against this.

I also bought 2 HDMI cables and 1 DVI->HDMI converter for my computer... no way imma not hook that baby up HD.

All in all I was happy with the purchase.

Step2: Initial Setup of the HTPC

Ok I had my test box from the previous explorations still configured so I decided to simply hook it up and get things going for the family while I ordered the parts needed to pimp that particular computer out for being a complete HTPC package (and with a little luck a dedicated webserver and NAS).

Current PC setup: No laughing it is what i had laying around.

Video: EVGA Geforce 8800 GT. (supplies HD output for video and honestly I suspect a bit overpowered for the actual job.)
CPU: Intel Core2Duo 1.9Ghz. (This CPU should be more then enough to handle Video/Web Browsing, my first dual core cpu given to me by xtrgamer)
RAM: 3GB Kingston DDR2. (I can't tell you exact specs but im sure since I always buy Kingston and always buy good CL ram its probably good.)
Audio: Integrated audio, but it does do optical audio out for 5.1 and all that jazz so unless this doesn't give what i want in the future I will probably stick with it.
HDD: Currently an old shitty run down and almost broken 320gb Seagate from god knows how long ago.
Network: Currently Wireless cause lubby is too lazy to run a network cable to the living room. Maybe if its a problem in the future.

As you can see this setup will not work cause umm the HDD is a little um SHIT!

Well lubby took his newegg.com prefered account and did a couple purchases to get this thing off the ground.

First we needed an HDD to get me off the ground. I figured 1.5TB would be enough, and frankly I seen no reason for a Raid setup. In the future I might buy an HDD for backup purposes but right now I just bought a new TV and need to get started on the overall project.

Also walking up to my entertainment center and using a wired keyboard and mouse will not suffice for long so I ordered a wireless keyboard to help with this trick. I wanted something descrete that wouldn't be too obtrusive on my cofee table so I came up with this solution. Reviews was not the greatest but I assume it is because people don't know the touchpad auto shuts off to save battery. The name is solid and I have used thier components many times before without any issues to speak of.

So all in all a good days work. At this point the family can browse the web and watch streaming netflix in HD (yes netflix streams HD now).

Also worth noting is that my primary PC has 2TB Raid0 Setup wich is currently storing all my videos and can easily stream to the HTPC while I wait for the parts to ship so that i can move all of this over to my HTPC and not have to run my seriously loud and power hungry 4ghz i5 system 24/7.

Spent some time today playing with ripping DVDs to H.264 encoded files.

30 minutes to rip a full DVD using DVDShrink

25-30 minutes to encode highest settings on Handbrake.

I do so much love my 4Ghz i5.

Process was really simple. Going to spend some time figuring out how to Batch encode with Handbrake so I can setup a bunch of DVDs to go at once while I do other things. Will let folks know.

DVD Shrink and burn with IMGBurn. ( It seems to work great with win7 and IMGBurn has a shortcut hack that lets shrink shutdown after transcode and launch IMGBurn not Nero's spam shit software.) Your created DVD is you backup copy.

Handbrake...OFC, (for H.264) I didnt need to say it exepet the latest 0.9.5 version is so simple a Doc can do it. You wont get BluRay quality but with some teaks HD is very do-able and streams wicked good. (HINT: Transcode the .img file created by Shrink and set Handbrake to transcode over nite and it will shutdown your PC if u like. Dont transcode on your HTPC! it will take too long. ) H.264 is the best but if you want a MKV house its up to you...H.264 is good for me.

XBMC is the smallest player and uses almost no resources when you think of WMP.

Your going to want to Tag all your shit propper so....MetaX for Movies and TV Shows. and TagScanner for all your Music. Tag Scanner has a learning curve that is about a day or so if your old (over 50) and slow (like me) but its worth it and I mean it...you'll love it once you learn it. MetaX is, stright up....awsome. Nuf said.

I have not paid for shit when it comes to Rip/Burn/Tag/Players. But if you must....Slysoft is the ticket. AnyDVD

DVD43 is a great (free) product but I have not had to use ether AnyDVD or DVD43 for past 6 months. Dont know why...

If you have a BluRay player just use it as a player...screw ripping and burning from or for it. It can be done but it takes too long and too many steps over what I posted above and you'll end up with a HD quality anyway (ie: MKV or H.264 quality).

Doc.

PS: I will chatt it with you on saturday lubby. I have some time tonite but I work tomorrow and I am locked in for some bz2 after work. I am happy with your venture. BTW, I have just upgraded my nas with 20 USD with of parts....LOL! :d

HDPC compatability is the only (outside) issue.

do want full HD video and if at all possible 5.1 audio on all my rips. "You wont get BluRay quality but with some teaks HD is very do-able and streams wicked good" Please go into detail about this statement as i need 1080i and will accept nothing less. and i assume my 4Ghz i5 should encode amazingly well.
